Question of the Week: "Comparing the nutrition of Fruit & Vegetable Juices"
The following question was submitted for discussion on this week's blog post: "I have heard I should avoid fruit juice since I have diabetes. What about vegetable juices? Can I have tomato juice and other vegetable juices?"If you were to compare fruit and vegetable juices, vegetable juices tend to have less carbohydrate than fruit juices. In a 4 oz glass, vegetable juice has 5 grams of carbohydrates (vs. 15 grams in a fruit juice). However, vegetables juices tend to be

Tears instead of Blood to Test Glucose? Wow!

"This new technology might encourage patients to check their blood sugars more often, which could lead to better control of their diabetes by a simple touch to the eye," said Jeffrey T. LaBe

I mentioned on twitter and facebook about the Avery – Smith & Nephew IV Prep recall. I would venture to say that this recall affects most of those with diabetes on an insulin pump. I’m not even sure there is a substitute. I use these pads with each new infusion set without fail. Not only does it help disinfect the site, it also helps the infusion set stick for the 3 days I wear it. So here is the information:

Eat it with a piece of whole grain bread, if you can.1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour4 veal shanks, about 2" thick each2 teaspoons olive oil2 large onions, sliced6 Roma tomatoes, finely chopped2 Tablespoons tomato paste1 1/2 cups white wine1
Tears instead of Blood to Test Glucose? Wow!
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona are developing a new type of self-monitoring blood glucose sensor that would measure glucose in tear fluid, Testing may give an indication of glucose levels in the blood as accurately as a test using a blood sample, the researchers said.
"This new technology might encourage patients to check their blood sugars more often, which could lead to better control of their diabetes by a simple touch to the eye," said Jeffrey T. LaBe
Nutrition in Bread: The Problems with Enriched White Flour
Manufacturers do not like whole grain products because they go bad quickly and attract pests. These pests seem to be “highly educated” on white flour because knowing probably that it is not good, they stay away from it. We should follow their example. Instead, we seemed to be hooked on the white “enriched” flours that not only have [...]

Roasted Celery Root with Prosciutto
"And the winner of the ugly vegetable award goes to....celery root!" Sometimes called root celery, knob celery or celeriac, this scary-looking vegetable is extremely low in calories, carbs and sodium while also being a good source of calcium and potassium. I've always been curious about this vegetable, but its appearance in the vegetable bin has kept me from picking it up, much less trying it, until now. My mission this past week was to try a new vegetable and, after looking over the entire vege

Never Say Never Again
Even though it only lasted fifteen minutes, I felt today's endocrinologist appointment was much more productive and less rushed than the past couple times. (Hmm, has he been reading my blog posts? The ones where I considered switching to an internist for my diabetes care, hmm?)The bigger news, but shorter conversation surrounded the 6.1% that came back as my A1C level, up from 5.8%. While my endocrinologist did not insist I needed to go on medication, he gently steered me in that direction, whic

I thought this image was a perfect fit for this post because it’s all about going against the grain. Life keeps me so busy with diabetes just being one part of everyday happenings. It’s easy to get caught up in the tide and continue on the current path. Those that can find make time to do the important things are the ones that are WINNING (lik

How to Choose the Correct Beef Steak Cuts
Not all steaks are created equal. Thus choosing the right grade and the right cut of meat makes all the difference in how tender the steak is and how much saturated fat and cholesterol you end up ingesting. Never mind the calories. The tenderness of a steak depends on where the steak is cut from. Beef [...]

Here goes...Most Favorite ExerciseSo many, I know I will probably miss some - walking, hiking, snowshoeing, elliptical, yoga and pilates moves with the balance ball. I should even add swimming even

National Nutrition Month 2011 -- How Can I Add More Fruits / Veggies to my Diet?
It is recommended that we eat anywhere between 5 and 9 servings of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, however, less than half of our population achieves that. According to a 2010 Gallup Poll, nationwide, less than half of Americans (46.6%) report eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables on five or more days per week, but 32.7% do so two to four days per week and 19.4% do so one or fewer days per week. However many servings YOU may be currently eating - my goal is to help

Question of the Week: Low Glucose but High A1c?
The following question was submitted by a reader for discussion on my blog, "I was recently told by my doctor I have pre-diabetes and that I need to lose weight, eat right, and get my sugar levels down. On a 12 hour fast, my glucose level was 73 yet my A1C was 6.1%. If my glucose is low, why is my A1c still high? What can I do?"An A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (the protein found
