A kind of new diabetes 2 treatment is a medication called DPP-4 inhibitors. It works by blocking DPP-4, the enzyme that breaks down GLP-1, a natural substance found in our intestines, with a structure similar to protein. When GLP-1 is released, it stimulates insulin secretion, slows the intestinal absorption of glucose, and reduces appetite.
Unfortunately, GLP-1 is broken down very quickly (in a few minutes) by DPP-4. DPP-4 inhibitors prevent this rapid breakdown of GLP
